California poppies are striking wildflowers that appear across many regions of North America.

Besides adding visual appeal to landscapes throughout the United States, this plant is sometimes promoted for possible medicinal uses. It’s commonly marketed for easing anxiety and improving sleep, but you might wonder whether those claims are supported by research.

This article covers what you should know about California poppies — their supplements, how they’re used, and the potential health effects.

What is California poppy?

The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) belongs to the Papaveraceae, or poppy, family. While it’s the state flower of California, it also grows in other U.S. states such as Arizona and in northern Mexico (1, 2).

These poppies flourish along roadsides as native wildflowers and are frequently planted in gardens.

The blooms vary from orange to yellow and serve as a food source for pollinators like bumblebees. They’ve earned nicknames such as “cup of gold” and “California sunlight” for their vivid hues (3).

How is California poppy used?

Beyond its horticultural appeal, California poppy is used in traditional and supplemental medicine.

Products containing California poppy extract — including tinctures and capsules — are promoted for their calming properties. Advocates say these products support relaxation, ease minor pain, and help with sleep.

Historically, California poppy has been employed in folk medicine for its sedative qualities (4).

Supplements featuring California poppy are often combined with other soothing herbs like valerian, although some formulations contain only California poppy extract.

Summary: California poppy is California’s state flower. It grows wild in many parts of the U.S. and is popular in gardens. In supplement form it’s usually promoted as a natural sleep aid and is frequently paired with other calming herbs such as valerian.

Does California poppy have health benefits?

California poppy contains various plant constituents, including alkaloids that influence GABA receptors within the central nervous system.

GABA receptors respond to the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which reduces neuronal firing. GABA is a major regulator of sleep (5).

Compounds that enhance GABA receptor activity — effectively increasing GABAergic effects — tend to produce sedative outcomes, whereas those that block GABA activity are typically stimulating (6).

Alkaloids found in California poppy, such as protopine and allocryptopine, interact with GABA receptors. Although research is sparse, some studies indicate the plant extract may have sedative effects when taken as a supplement (4).

Nonetheless, because research is limited, California poppy is not recommended as a treatment for medical conditions.

May promote sleep when combined with other herbs

There’s limited evidence that California poppy extract can improve sleep when used alongside valerian extract.

Similar to the alkaloids in California poppy, compounds in valerian (Valeriana officinalis) — including valerenol and valerenic acid — enhance GABAergic signaling, producing sedative effects (7).

In a one-month trial of 36 adults with insomnia, taking up to four tablets nightly of a supplement containing 80 mg of California poppy extract and 32 mg of valerian root extract resulted in meaningful increases in sleep duration and sleep efficiency (8).

By the end of the study, participants’ Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) scores dropped by roughly 30% (8).

However, this study lacked a control group, and the researchers were employed by the supplement manufacturer, which could bias the findings (8).

Outside of this single trial, human data on California poppy’s sleep effects are scant. There’s no evidence that California poppy alone treats sleep disorders, so its individual efficacy is uncertain.

May have sedative and anti-anxiety properties

Animal and human studies suggest California poppy extract might have sedative and anxiety-reducing effects, but most of these reports date from the 1990s or early 2000s, so their findings warrant cautious interpretation.

For instance, older research found California poppy extract produced calming and sleep-promoting effects in mice. Another older rodent study reported the extract reduced pain (9, 10).

Moreover, a three-month trial involving 264 individuals with mild to moderate anxiety showed that taking two tablets twice daily containing California poppy extract, hawthorn extract, and magnesium reduced anxiety symptoms more than placebo (11).

Although these outcomes are encouraging, no study demonstrates that California poppy alone is effective for these conditions.

Contemporary human trials are needed.

Summary: Some limited research implies California poppy may help with sleep and anxiety when combined with other ingredients. However, because studies are few, California poppy is not considered a proven or safe treatment for any health issue.

Potential side effects of California poppy

California poppy may interact with certain medications and could cause unwanted effects.

One report cautioned that California poppy extract and its alkaloids, including escholtzine and allocryptopine, might interact with medications such as blood thinners (for example, warfarin) and blood pressure drugs like metoprolol (12, 13).

There’s also little data on the safety of high doses of California poppy extract.

Given these uncertainties, it’s not advisable to use this supplement without talking to your healthcare provider first.

You may want to consider other natural options with better evidence for anxiety and sleep. For anxiety, magnesium, saffron, and vitamin D have some supportive data, while valerian and melatonin are more established for sleep (14, 15, 16, 17, 18).

Still, always consult your doctor before starting any new supplement.

Summary: California poppy extract might interact with anticoagulants and antihypertensive drugs. Because research is limited, its adverse effect profile is not well understood.

Should you take California poppy extract?

There are very few rigorous human studies assessing California poppy extract.

Since existing trials typically combine California poppy with other ingredients like valerian, magnesium, or hawthorn, it’s unclear whether the poppy contributes independently to any observed benefits.

No reliable evidence currently shows this supplement effectively treats insomnia, anxiety, chronic pain, or other medical conditions.

How do you take it?

California poppy is sold in tablets, capsules, teas, and tinctures.

The National Capital Poison Center notes a common adult dose of California poppy extract is about 40 mg twice daily (19).

However, because of the limited evidence, it’s generally preferable to select supplements with more established safety and efficacy. Many clinicians advise against routinely using products that lack sufficient research.

If you choose to try California poppy, speak with your healthcare provider beforehand.

Summary: There’s no solid evidence that California poppy alone treats any medical condition. Consult your doctor before trying this supplement.

The bottom line

The California poppy is an attractive wildflower that some people use as a supplement for anxiety and sleep.

Aside from a small number of studies, there’s little solid evidence that the plant provides health benefits when used by itself. Therefore, California poppy supplements are not recommended as treatments for medical conditions.

If you’re considering California poppy supplements, discuss them with your healthcare provider first.
