Mutual of Omaha provides multiple kinds of Medicare supplement (Medigap) plans across the country, including Plan A, C, D, F, G, and N.

Medicare supplement policies, commonly called Medigap, assist with expenses that Original Medicare does not pay. These plans are offered by private insurers such as Mutual of Omaha.

There are currently 10 standardized Medigap plan types, and Mutual of Omaha underwrites six of them. Each option is identified by a letter.

Plan A

Plan A is the simplest Medigap option. In fact, every insurer that sells Medigap must make Plan A available to beneficiaries.

Plan A helps pay certain copayments and coinsurance for Part A (hospital insurance) and similarly covers copays and coinsurance for Part B (medical insurance).

Plan C

Plan C provides broader protection than Plan A. Its coverage includes:

  • copays and coinsurance for Parts A and B
  • deductibles for Parts A and B
  • emergency care when traveling abroad

As of January 1, 2020, people newly eligible for Medicare can no longer buy Plan C. However, those who had Plan C or were eligible before 2020 may keep or purchase it.

Plan D

Plan D offers the same benefits included in Plan C.

Because of that parity, Plan D can be a suitable alternative for individuals who are no longer eligible to enroll in Plan C.

Plan F

Plan F delivers the most comprehensive Medigap protection. Its benefits include:

  • copays and coinsurance for Parts A and B
  • deductibles for Parts A and B
  • Part B excess charges
  • emergency care while traveling internationally

Like Plan C, Plan F covered the Part B deductible, so it is not available to people who first become eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.

There is also a high-deductible version of Plan F. These policies generally have lower monthly premiums but require you to meet a deductible before benefits begin.

Plan G

Plan G matches Plan F’s benefits with the single exception of the Part B deductible. That makes Plan G accessible to new Medicare enrollees looking for extensive protection.

As with Plan F, a high-deductible variant of Plan G is also offered.

Plan N

Key elements covered by Plan N include:

  • copays and coinsurance for Parts A and B
  • deductible for Part A
  • emergency medical care during foreign travel

What do Mutual of Omaha Medigap plans cover?

Medigap benefits are standardized. That means a given letter plan must deliver the same basic set of benefits no matter which insurer sells it.

For instance, the fundamental features of a Plan D policy from Mutual of Omaha must match those of a Plan D policy from another carrier such as Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Part A benefits

Part A pays for inpatient services in various facilities. Depending on the Medigap plan you choose, it may help pay for:

  • the Part A deductible
  • hospital costs and related coinsurance
  • skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • hospice copays and coinsurance
  • blood (first three pints)

Part B benefits

Part B covers many outpatient services and certain preventive items. Depending on the plan, Medigap can assist with:

  • the Part B deductible (if you were Medicare-eligible before 2020)
  • coinsurance
  • copayments
  • Part B excess charges

Foreign travel emergency care

Certain Medigap plans offer emergency coverage while you’re traveling outside the United States. Note there is a lifetime cap of $50,000 for this benefit.

The bottom line

Mutual of Omaha sells six Medigap plans nationwide, though availability can vary by area.

Each Medigap letter plan is standardized to provide the same core benefits. Premiums are determined by the plan type, where you live, and how the insurer prices its monthly rates.

Because Medigap availability and pricing differ by location, it’s wise to compare multiple choices in your area. You can start by reviewing options on the Medicare website or exploring medicare supplement plans in iowa for region-specific information.
